Georgia Takes Care of Business

In his last home game, Billy Bennett finally got a game ball.

Bennett kicked three field goals to become the Southeastern Conference’s career scoring leader and David Greene threw for 289 yards to lead No. 6 Georgia past Kentucky, 30-10, Saturday at Athens, Ga.

“It is a special thing, but I can’t really say what it means,” Bennett said of his record. “I’m just glad to get it off my back.”

Bennett has 382 points in his career, and his 81 field goals also set a conference record.

With the victory, Georgia, which improved to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference, earned at least a share of the East Division title with Florida. Tennessee could create a three-way tie by beating Kentucky next week.

Georgia would benefit from that scenario, with the top team in the bowl championship series standings reaching the conference title game. Last week, the Bulldogs were sixth, a spot ahead of the Volunteers, with the Gators 13th.

Next week, Georgia finishes up against Georgia Tech.

“Hopefully, we’ll take care of business next weekend and Tennessee will take care of business,” Bulldog Coach Mark Richt said.

Jared Lorenzen completed 21 of 34 passes for only 137 yards and an interception for the Wildcats (4-7, 1-6).

It was the final home game for outgoing Georgia Athletic Director Vince Dooley, who won 201 games in 25 years as coach of the Bulldogs. In keeping with his wishes, the school didn’t hold a ceremony.

No. 9 Tennessee 48, Vanderbilt 0 -- Casey Clausen threw three touchdown passes and scored on a sneak to lead the Volunteers (9-2, 5-2) over the Commodores (2-10, 1-7) at Knoxville, Tenn.

Mark Jones returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown for Tennessee, which is trying to stay in contention for a berth in the conference championship and a BCS game.

The Volunteers were ahead, 21-0, at the end of the first quarter after Clausen’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Tony Brown, Jabari Davis’ seven-yard touchdown run and Jones’ return.

On Tennessee’s third drive of the game, Clausen broke Peyton Manning’s school record of 132 passes without an interception and pushed the mark to 143 before Bill Alford picked off a pass in the second quarter.

Auburn 28, Alabama 23 -- Carnell Williams opened the game with an 80-yard touchdown run and finished with 204 yards to lead the Tigers (7-5, 5-3) over the Crimson Tide (4-8, 2-6) in the Iron Bowl at Auburn, Ala.

Williams came into the game with only five carries in the last two Iron Bowl games because of injuries, but he gave Auburn a lift that might have saved Coach Tommy Tuberville’s job.

Auburn blew most of an 18-2 halftime lead against Alabama before holding on late.

Williams had to score the decisive touchdown twice. He juked a defender and darted 27 yards into the end zone but a receiver was called for holding at the five.

Three plays later, he leaped over the goal line from the one with 7:27 left to make it 28-16.

Clemson 63, South Carolina 17 -- Charlie Whitehurst tied the school record with four touchdown passes and the Tigers (8-4) made their strongest pitch yet to save Coach Tommy Bowden’s job with a victory over the Gamecocks (5-7) at Columbia, S.C.

Whitehurst completed 18 of 26 passes for 302 yards and helped Bowden to his fourth win in five meetings against South Carolina Coach Lou Holtz.

Arkansas 52, Mississippi State 6 -- Cedric Cobbs ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Razorbacks (8-3, 4-3) over the Bulldogs (2-9, 1-6) at Fayetteville, Ark.

Matt Jones completed 11 of 16 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns and had 73 yards rushing.

Shaud Williams, the conference’s top rusher, gained 93 yards in 18 carries for Alabama.
