Three Marines killed in a traffic accident Sunday were identified Monday as having recently returned from service in Iraq. The California Highway Patrol says the driver was speeding, lost control and smashed into another vehicle and a tree along Interstate 15 near Temecula shortly after midnight Sunday.

The Marine Corps identified the dead as Lance Cpl. Chad Garner, 20, of Washington, Pa.; Pvt. Michael Newton, 19, of Mecklenburg, Va.; and Cpl. Scott Stasney, 21, of Marathon, Wis. All were from a transport battalion that is part of the 1st Force Service Support Group of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
