Freshman Kevin Kolb threw two touchdown passes to Brandon Middleton as Houston defeated East Carolina, 27-13, in a Conference USA game Tuesday night at Greenville, N.C.

The Cougars (4-1) won their Conference USA opener for the first time in three seasons. The Pirates (0-5, 0-2) have lost seven in a row.

Joseph Logan of Pinson, Ala., has been charged with attempted murder after police said he held a gun to his son’s head and pulled the trigger in a fit of rage after Alabama’s double-overtime loss to Arkansas on Saturday.

Logan, who according to police reports had been drinking, went into a tantrum after the Crimson Tide’s 34-31 loss. During that tantrum, Logan’s son Seth asked him for a new car.

The father then went to his car and returned with a pistol, grabbed his son by the collar and put the gun to his forehead. Seth Logan moved his head just before his father pulled the trigger and the bullet whistled by his head. He fled to a neighbor’s house to call police.

Tennessee reserve center Chuck Prugh was listed in critical condition in intensive care with an unknown illness. Prugh started to have flu-like symptoms Sept. 23 and took antibiotics but couldn’t recover.... Wisconsin Eau Claire linebacker Justin Greenwood remained in critical but stable condition in a St. Paul, Minn., hospital after he collapsed and lost consciousness in a game Saturday against Wisconsin River Falls.... The Seattle Times reported that NCAA investigators are reexamining Washington Coach Keith Gilbertson’s involvement in office pools and how often he may have participated.
