Surrounded by Children, First Lady Touts Books
First Lady Laura Bush saluted the joy of reading with giggling Moscow schoolchildren at a book festival where Lyudmila Putin, the wife of Russian President Vladimir V. Putin, played host.
Laura Bush said such events have a purpose beyond lauding reading and writers. “This festival is also a celebration of freedom, the freedom to write what we want to write and to read the books we want to read,” she said.
The first lady has tried to be an ambassador of American values during her five-day trip to Paris and Moscow.
