A $2.9-million state grant will fund a specialty crop institute at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

The institute will study such crops grown in California, said William J. Lyons Jr., state secretary of food and agriculture. He called Cal Poly “a good fit” for the institute because of its proximity to specialty crop growers. Specialty crops, including wine grapes, strawberries and lettuce, make up much of San Luis Obispo County’s $479-million annual agriculture production.
