Morningside Rolls to Another Victory, 57-7

Quarterback Funaki Mateaki scored four of Inglewood Morningside’s eight rushing touchdowns and the Monarchs held host El Segundo to 46 yards in the second half of a 57-7 victory Friday night. It was the Pioneer League opener for both teams.

Heliki Fifita ran 14 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns, including a 10-yard score with 2:12 remaining in the first half to give Morningside (5-0) a 28-7 halftime lead.

Tyson Hawley completed nine of 24 passes for 91 yards and threw for El Segundo’s touchdown, a 49-yard pass to Brad Franks midway through the second quarter to pull the Eagles (2-2) within 22-7.

Morningside’s defense recorded two safeties, blocked two punts and held El Segundo to 20 yards rushing for the game.

The Monarchs also intercepted three of Hawley’s passes, two by Robert Thomas.

He ran eight times for 119 yards as the Monarchs rolled up 378 yards rushing.
