Brigham Young (3-4, 2-2) was booed loudly and often by the homecoming crowd of 58,377 and received mock cheers for even minor accomplishments like first downs. The record for points scored on the Cougars in Provo was 49, set by Arizona State in a 49-17 victory in 1972.

South Carolina sophomore Daccus Turman had three short touchdown runs at Columbia, S.C., as the Gamecocks won their fourth in a row over Kentucky, 27-21.

South Carolina (4-2, 1-2 Southeastern Conference) built a 27-7 lead through three quarters and had knocked Kentucky quarterback Jared Lorenzen out of the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit.

But backup Shane Boyd led two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter to give the Wildcats (2-4, 0-3) a chance. Kentucky got the ball back with 2:07 to play, but Boyd overthrew Derek Abney on fourth down with 16 seconds to go.

Minnesota and Michigan play for the 100th time tonight in Minneapolis, but this meeting has a lot more riding on it than the Little Brown Jug, the trophy that goes to the winner.

A victory could pave the way to the Rose Bowl for No. 17 Minnesota (6-0, 2-0 Big Ten), which hasn’t been to Pasadena since 1962. Michigan (4-2, 1-1), ranked 20th, is trying to keep its conference title hopes alive.

The game was moved to tonight to avoid a potential conflict with a potential Minnesota Twins’ playoff game, but the start time has Minnesota officials worried. A victory by the Golden Gophers could create postgame rowdiness. Officials are on heightened alert, especially after the riot that occurred early Sunday at Mankato, Minn., following a homecoming game. It resulted in the arrests of 45 people.

And Dinkytown, the area surrounding the campus, is no stranger to rowdiness. Last April, after the Golden Gophers won the NCAA hockey title, mobs thrashed parts of the area.

Mississippi officials ended their search for a new mascot, citing lack of interest in the two proposed replacements for the ousted Colonel Rebel.

Ole Miss will have no mascot at sporting events but will continue to license merchandise with Colonel Rebel, a white-haired old man who carries a cane and resembles a plantation owner.

Mississippi officials said a new mascot was needed because Colonel Rebel didn’t look athletic or intimidating enough. The university has stopped fans from waving Confederate battle flags at football games in recent years.
