Wearing the Coop

Flying south for the winter with a feathered friend may never be the same. Travel cages can be unwieldy, and not every Baby Huey takes well to a bird harness. Now, however, there’s the PetPocket Bird Carrier, which lets fowl tourists take in the sights from a see-through mesh fabric container worn on their human traveling companion’s chest.

The carrier has a zippered bottom with a removable tray, a beveled wooden perch and a place to hang toys.

High fliers might keep a few rules in mind. Most airlines require a reservation and health certificate from a veterinarian issued within 10 days of the flight. The Wild Bird Conservation Act requires most species of birds to have a permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before leaving the country. And like all animals, birds are subject to the quarantine rules of the country they are visiting.
