Hit by the pitch
The Pedro Martinez-Karim Garcia incident in Game 3 of the Red Sox-Yankees series renewed calls for the abolition of the designated-hitter rule in the American League. Proponents argue that there would be fewer hit batters if the pitcher knew he could be a retaliation target. Statistics, however, show that the National league pitchers hit more batters in each of the last seven years.
