High school students can now use cellular telephones on campus.

The Palm Springs Unified School District on Tuesday ended a nearly 15-year ban and voted to allow the teenagers to carry and use cell phones on campuses. But restrictions still apply in classrooms and during school activities, district officials said.

“We’ll definitely take a hard line if a kid pulls out a phone in class,” said John Mendoza, principal at Cathedral City High School.

Cell phones, beepers, pagers and other electronic-communication devices must be turned off during classes and at any other time directed by school administrators, school board member Andrew Green said.

Middle- and elementary-school students can bring cell phones to school only if they have prior consent for health reasons.
