Roddick Win Streak Reaches 20

U.S. Open champion and No. 2-ranked Andy Roddick outlasted Max Mirnyi of Belarus, 6-1, 6-7 (9), 7-5, Wednesday in the second round of the Madrid Masters for his 20th consecutive victory in tournament play.

Top-ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain staved off two match points and rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the final set to defeat Wayne Ferreira of South Africa, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (4).

Roddick wasted two match points in the second-set tiebreaker, at 7-6 and 9-8.

“I felt like I was playing better than he was, but then he just [sneaked] out the tiebreaker,” Roddick said.

Wimbledon champion Roger Federer of Switzerland beat Alex Corretja of Spain, 6-4, 6-3.

Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium beat Anna Pistolesi of Israel, 6-1, 7-6 (5), to reach the quarterfinals of the Swisscom Challenge at Zurich.

Fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia double-faulted 13 times and lost to countrywoman Nadia Petrova, 7-6 (3), 6-3, and Jelena Dokic of Serbia and Montenegro defeated Alexandra Stevenson, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Boxing

The Nevada Athletic Commission chairman scolded promoter Bob Arum for allegations of scoring improprieties after Oscar De La Hoya’s controversial loss to Shane Mosley, and said the matter is closed.

Commission Chairman Luther Mack called Arum’s comments “unfair and absurd.”

Arum lashed out at the judging after the Sept. 13 fight won narrowly by Mosley, suggesting there was a vendetta against him by a member of the commission that led to De La Hoya losing. He apologized 10 days later.

Arum did not attend Wednesday’s meeting.

Basketball

Guard Marie Ferdinand of the San Antonio Silver Stars scored 21 points to lead the WNBA Select team past Brazilian champion Sao Paulo FC, 87-62, in the Women’s Basketball World Cup at Samara, Russia.

Texas senior forward Annissa Hastings will sit out the season after rupturing her left Achilles’ tendon in a workout Monday. She’s is scheduled to have surgery today.

Former NFL player Rae Carruth and three men convicted of conspiring to kill Carruth’s pregnant girlfriend were ordered by a judge to pay about $5.8 million in damages to her estate.

Cherica Adams was shot Nov. 16, 1999, at Charlotte, N.C., and died about a month later; the baby survived but has cerebral palsy.

Carruth, who played with the Carolina Panthers, is serving at least 18 years in prison for his role in the murder. Two others are in prison and the third is free.

Vince R. Rogers, a former employee of a Salt Lake City power company who admitted to setting off a bomb that knocked out a power substation during the 2002 Winter Olympics, was sentenced to four years in federal prison and ordered to pay $25,000 to the company.
