Pool hall mathematician
Geoff Boucher’s article on pool and pool rooms (“Pool Hall Philosophers,” Oct. 9) rang true for me from start to finish. I once had dreams of being a professional pool player, but I could never get myself to the necessary level and I decided to go where my real talents seemed to lie (I am a mathematician by profession, a professor at UCLA). I still care about the game, however, and I liked seeing it covered well and with the respect it deserves.
It made me want to get out my stick and go down to a hall and get in stroke again. Maybe this weekend I shall.
