Andy Roddick’s 20-match winning streak ended with a stunning 7-6 (3), 6-2 loss to unseeded Nicolas Massu in the third round of the Madrid Masters on Thursday in Spain.

Roddick, the U.S. Open champion, let the first set slip away after leading 5-2, then had his powerful serve broken twice in the second set. He ended the match by double-faulting.

“The one thing I didn’t do that well today was the serve,” Roddick said. “Besides that, I played OK. He returned well.”

It was the American’s first loss since Tim Henman beat him in the semifinals at Washington in August.

“Clearly, this was one of the best matches in my life,” said Massu, a Chilean ranked 21st in the world -- 19 spots below Roddick.

In the tiebreaker, Roddick’s ace gave him a 3-2 edge, before Massu won five consecutive points.

Massu broke Roddick to lead 2-0 in the second set, then won his own next two service games at love.

World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero edged fellow Spaniard Felix Mantilla, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (0) in the last match of the day.

Earlier, Wimbledon champion Roger Federer, along with Sebastien Grosjean, Paradorn Srichaphan and Younes El Aynaoui eliminated American opponents in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals.

Singh beat Alex Cejka, 8 and 7, and Campbell defeated Fredrik Jacobson, 6 and 5.

“If I play like I’m doing right now for the next two or three years, I’m going to contend for the world No. 1 spot. That’s my goal,” Singh said.

Thomas Bjorn and Tim Clark also won 36-hole matches, although both had to overcome deficits. Clark got past Stephen Leaney, 3 and 2, and Bjorn beat Len Mattiace, 4 and 3.

The four seeded players had byes in the first round and play today in the quarterfinals: defending champion Ernie Els, going for a record-tying fifth title, versus Clark; PGA champion Shaun Micheel versus Singh; British Open champion Ben Curtis versus Campbell; and Masters champion Mike Weir versus Bjorn.

The tournament invites players based on a ranking system that takes into account performances in the four majors. The defending champion and No. 1-ranked player qualify automatically.

Top-ranked Tiger Woods, though, passed up the event, as did Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, David Toms and Kenny Perry.

Peter Jacobsen birdied his first six holes -- and 11 overall -- while shooting a nine-under 63 to set a first-round tournament record and take the lead at the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro in North Carolina.

The course was redesigned over the winter by Davis Love III, who opened it up by moving around several tee boxes while reconfiguring all 18 greens.

The variety helped Jacobsen to the best start to a single round in his career. He birdied the first five holes in Las Vegas last weekend.

Behind Jacobsen was Stephen Ames at eight-under 64, followed by Toms and Shigeki Maruyama at seven-under 65.

Behind Toms and Maruyama is John E. Morgan, who shot a six-under 66. A rookie from England, Morgan’s best finish was a fifth-place tie this year at the B.C. Open.

Nathan Smith of Brookville, Pa., became the youngest winner of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship when Bryan Norton quit because of a calf injury after only nine of 36 holes at Wilmington, Del. Smith, 25, was 4 up when play stopped. The previous record for youngest champion was 29, Greg Puga’s age when he won in 2000.

Jurisprudence

Former NBA star Jayson Williams’ trial in the death of a limousine driver will be moved to a neighboring county in New Jersey because of heavy publicity about the case.

Judge Edward Coleman directed that the trial, tentatively scheduled to begin in January, be held in Somerset County instead of Hunterdon County.

Williams, 35, is accused of recklessly handling the shotgun that killed limousine driver Costas Christofi in 2002 at Williams’ Alexandria Township home. He could get nearly 55 years in prison on the charges, the most serious of which is aggravated manslaughter.

Iowa State forward Jackson Vroman, arrested early Thursday on a drunken-driving charge, was suspended from the basketball team for the second time in five months and his return was in question, Coach Wayne Morgan said.

Vroman, a 6-foot-10 senior, was suspended in May after being charged with possession of marijuana. That suspension, mandatory under the athletic department’s code of conduct because it involved drugs, later was lifted.

Iowa State also is without starting point guard Tim Barnes, who is academically ineligible for the first semester.
