Re “At Least 100 Bases Said to Be in Line for Closure,” Oct. 14: An often overlooked consequence of the base closings is the impact on the military retirees and their dependents. Many settle in close proximity of a base in order to take advantage of the commissary, PX and, increasingly important, the possibility of getting their medications free at the base dispensary. The willingness to reenlist or join the National Guard depends very much on the impression that promises are kept and those who risk their lives for the nation’s freedom are properly cared for in their old age.
