Miami, Payton Run It Up

Jarrett Payton, son of the late Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton, had his first 100-yard game Saturday in No. 2 Miami’s 52-14 victory over Temple at Miami.

Payton carried 16 times for 115 yards and scored twice as the Hurricanes defeated the Owls for the 12th consecutive time.

The Hurricanes (7-0, 3-0 Big East) extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 26. They also won their 39th consecutive regular-season game and 27th in a row in the Big East.

Temple (1-6, 0-2) hasn’t played Miami close since the Hurricanes joined the conference in 1992, losing by an average score of 45-11.

Payton had a lot to do with the latest one-sided affair.

“I’m very happy for that young man,” said Temple Coach Bobby Wallace, who grew up with Walter Payton in Jackson, Miss., and occasionally played softball with the Chicago Bear legend.

The Hurricanes finished with 342 yards rushing and 259 passing, eclipsing 600 yards in offense for the first time since 2001.

Brock Berlin completed 16 of 26 passes for 187 yards and threw two touchdown passes.

Berlin found Jason Geathers in the flat for a 15-yard score that made it 24-14 before halftime.

On the opening drive of the third quarter, linebacker D.J. Williams ran 61 yards on a fake punt.

“We never slowed them down offensively all game long,” Wallace said.

“We were hanging by a thread and the fake punt broke the thread.”

Temple, which entered the game with the Big East’s top passing offense at 274 yards per game, was held to 21 yards passing.

Syracuse 39, Boston College 14 -- R.J. Anderson threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score at Syracuse, N.Y., as the Orangemen (4-2, 1-1) routed the Eagles (4-3, 1-1).

Anderson was 20 for 27 for 215 yards as Syracuse remained the only team in Division I-A that hasn’t thrown an interception.

Pittsburgh 42, Rutgers 32 -- Larry Fitzgerald had eight catches for a career-best 207 yards and two touchdowns at Piscataway, N.J., as the Panthers (4-2, 1-0) rebounded from their loss to Notre Dame.

The Scarlet Knights (3-4, 0-3) have lost 25 conference games in a row.
