The top five teams remained the same in this week’s Associated Press college football poll after a weekend devoid of major upsets.

Oklahoma kept its season-long hold on the top spot by receiving 62 of the 65 first-place votes after a 34-13 victory over No. 24 Missouri on Saturday.

Miami got the other two first-place votes after beating Temple, 52-14.

Oklahoma received 1,622 points in balloting by the panel of sports writers and broadcasters, and the Hurricanes had 1,558.

Virginia Tech, the only other unbeaten team from a major conference, was third, followed by Georgia and USC.

Florida State and Washington State were tied for sixth, followed by Ohio State, LSU and Purdue.

The USA Today/ESPN coaches poll had the same top three teams as the AP.

The only other two unbeaten Division 1-A teams were No. 12 Northern Illinois and No. 15 Texas Christian.

Northern Illinois was joined by fellow Mid-American Conference school Bowling Green, which debuted at No. 23.

It’s the first time in 30 years the Mid-American Conference has had two teams in the poll at the same time.

Miami of Ohio was 17th and Kent State was 19th on Nov. 5, 1973.

Duke fired Coach Carl Franks and hired defensive coordinator Ted Roof to replace him for the rest of the season.

The firing comes a day after the Blue Devils (2-5) fell behind Wake Forest, 42-0, at halftime, and lost, 42-13, for their 29th straight Atlantic Coast Conference loss.

“Halftime of the game yesterday was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me,” Athletic Director Joe Alleva said.

Franks is the third Division I-A head coach to be fired this season, joining John Mackovic at Arizona and Todd Berry at Army.

Franks, a former Duke tight end, was 7-45 in 4 1/2 seasons.
