Gruesome gore and bloody action ruled the top two slots at the nation’s theaters, with a remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” hooking No. 1 and Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill Vol. 1” staking out the No. 2 position. On Sunday some competitors thought the Miramax movie had not performed as well as Fox’s “Runaway Jury,” but when numbers were reported Monday “Kill Bill” lived up to Sunday projections and held on to second place.

Clint Eastwood’s dark “Mystic River” did solid business in its first weekend in moderately wide release, averaging $7,120 per theater in 1,467 locations.

With no other family/kid films in the market, MGM’s “Good Boy!” has proved a modest success, dropping only 32% in its second weekend, grossing $8.9 million and $25.7 million to date.
