Oxnard Warns Traffic Scofflaws

Motorists who fail to stop for a red light at an accident-prone intersection in north Oxnard equipped with new surveillance cameras will be issued $321 citations beginning Oct. 30.

The cameras were recently installed at Gonzales Road and Rose Avenue, one of the city’s busiest and most dangerous intersections.

Once the registered owner of the vehicle is identified from photographs of the license plates, that individual will be sent a citation in the mail, authorities said. The owner can appeal the citation if it turns out that the individual was not the driver when the violation occurred.

Traffic officers monitoring the program will be able to access photos and video footage collected from the stoplight cameras via the Internet, authorities said.

“Reviewing officers are provided high-quality images of the driver and vehicle along with 12 seconds of full-motion video showing the actual running of the red light,” said Randy Latimer, senior traffic officer and administrator of the photo enforcement program.

Oxnard and Ventura are the only cities in the county that use the cameras. Since 1997, Oxnard has installed cameras at more than a dozen intersections.
