From Times Wire Reports

The estranged husband of a San Jose Mercury News photographer was convicted Thursday of second-degree murder.

Raymond Houston, 41, of Oakland had been jailed since his arrest nearly two years ago after the body of his wife, Luci Houston, 43, was found in the backseat of her car on Nov. 25, 2001. She had been shot in the head and stomach.

Houston faces a maximum of 40 years to life in prison when he’s sentenced Dec. 12.

Prosecutors had hoped to prove Houston guilty of first-degree murder, and portrayed him as an abusive and controlling man who killed his wife after an argument.

Luci Houston wanted to end the couple’s four-year marriage. They had been separated for five months before her death.
