Electronics and entertainment giant Sony Corp. said today that it planned to trim 20,000 jobs, or 13% of its workforce, in the next three years as part of a plan to turn around its electronics division.

Of the jobs cuts, 7,000 will be in Japan, the company said.

Sony said it would increase efficiency and integrate administrative and corporate jobs that overlap.

It will bring together engineers in its home and mobile electronics sectors, such as cellphones, TVs and video game consoles, to beef up development of computer chips and devices, the company said.
