State Sen. Bruce McPherson (R-Santa Cruz) has ended speculation about his future, declaring that he will not seek elective office next year.

“I’m not ready to retire and plan on being actively involved in politics and policy, but it won’t be as a member of the California state Assembly or the United States Congress in 2004,” McPherson said Tuesday during an announcement on the county courthouse steps.

McPherson was rumored to be considering a run for Congress, where he would have challenged Rep. Sam Farr (D-Carmel) or perhaps trying to return to the Sacramento statehouse with a run for Assembly.

A two-term state senator, McPherson has exhausted his legislative term limits in the Senate, but was still eligible for at least another term in the Assembly.
