Adelphia’s Customers in L.A. Due Refund
Cable television provider Adelphia Communications Corp. said it would issue more than $5 million in refunds to customers in Los Angeles and withdraw its appeal of an order for those refunds from the City Council.
Adelphia, which is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, said credits would be issued to 220,000 customers in their next monthly billing cycle, and said those customers would subsequently be credited for a lower rate in line with the city’s orders.
“Although we strongly disagree with the city’s rate order, our goal is to put this dispute ... behind us,” said Tom Carlock, a regional vice president for Adelphia.
The L.A. City Council voted unanimously in May to order Adelphia to roll back its rate increases. The company appealed to the Federal Communications Commission.
Adelphia, the largest cable company in the city, in early July paid the city $2.6 million in back franchise fees dating to 1995.
