Who Needs Term Limits When There’s Recall?

Maybe our approach to term limits has been completely backward. Rather than making people leave office after two terms, they should be elected indefinitely, subject only to recall. If the recall succeeds, the plurality winner takes office. Honestly, isn’t this recall election more fun than all of those dreadful primaries?

Re “Pressure’s on Senator to Drop Out of Race, but Why Should He?” Capitol Journal, by George Skelton, Sept. 1: Are the Republicans so desperate to steal the governorship in California that they will use any highhanded pressure on viable candidates to drop out of the race, so that “Mr. Terminator” can win without opposition from any other qualified candidate? State Sen. Tom McClintock is from my district, and though I did not vote for him, I believe that he is a much better candidate for governor. He is experienced in the workings of government in Sacramento. He is more creditable than Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Let the best man win fairly without rigging the ballot.

Thank you for the questions on higher education you asked the front-runners in the governor’s race (Sept. 1). This is the kind of coverage we voters need to make the best decision. Of the seven candidates, Gov. Gray Davis, Schwarzenegger, Peter M. Camejo and Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante answered with typically vague campaign talk, avoiding straight answers, while Arianna Huffington, Peter Ueberroth and McClintock fully answered the questions posed to them in a thoughtful and complete way.

If we are looking for a decisive leader, Democrats should vote for Huffington [who is running as an independent], while Republicans can choose between Ueberroth and McClintock.
