The Oakland Athletics used their standard formula to stretch their winning streak to 10 games and move a season-high 28 games over .500.

Mark Ellis drove in the tiebreaking run with a 12th-inning sacrifice fly and Chris Singleton added an RBI single to lead Oakland past the Orioles, 2-0, Tuesday night at Baltimore.

It was a typical performance for the A’s, who rank 13th in the AL with a .253 team batting average but have the second-best record in the league.

“Our pitching was outstanding,” Oakland Manager Ken Macha said.

It was the ninth consecutive loss for the Orioles, four of which have come against Oakland. Baltimore has been outscored, 24-10, in going 0-7 against the A’s.

Baltimore has gone 29 consecutive innings without a run and has scored only 12 runs during its skid, the season’s longest.

It was the ninth victory in 12 games for the Red Sox, who are four games behind the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

Burkett has been trying to get his 10th victory since Aug. 12, going 0-2 in his last four starts.

John Mabry hit a leadoff infield single off Lance Carter (7-4), and pinch-runner Chad Meyers went to third on Bret Boone’s double.

Texas 8, Kansas City 7 -- Laynce Nix hit a three-run homer and Mark Teixeira drove in three runs for the Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

The Royals scored four runs in the ninth, but fell short when Francisco Cordero struck out pinch-hitter Aaron Guiel and Raul Ibanez to end it with a runner on second. Kansas City remained two games behind the Central-leading White Sox.

Detroit 8, Cleveland 6 -- Cody Ross hit a grand slam for his first major league home run, then needed to be carted off the field with an apparent knee injury in the eighth inning at Detroit.

Detroit needs to need to go at least 8-17 the rest of the way to avoid matching the 1962 New York Mets’ record of 120 losses in a season.
