Los Angeles Police Department undercover officers, who had been monitoring illegal drug activity for several days in a Northridge apartment complex, shot and killed an armed suspect Wednesday after a confrontation, police said.

Two plainclothes officers conducting a narcotics investigation fatally wounded the 18-year-old man after he fired shots from a semiautomatic pistol, said LAPD spokesman Lt. John Pasquariello.

Police did not release the name of the officers or the suspect, who died about 11 a.m. at the scene in the 19100 block of Bryant Street in the Park Parthenia housing complex.

Police had stepped up patrols after a recent drug-related killing in the 466-unit, low-rent complex that is known for drug-dealing and other crimes.

The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation, Pasquariello said.
