Mark Olsen’s article on alternatives to the usual multiplex fare (“Consider the Alternatives,” Aug. 28) was informative but left off one of the real stars of classic film screenings: the Alex Film Society at Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre.

While AFS doesn’t screen every week, for 10 years our six to eight annual programs have presented great classic films. Each program includes a period cartoon, ancillary materials and trailers. Often the stars or crew from these films are interviewed on stage.

Many find the experience of a classic film in the restored 1925 vaudeville theater also a fantastic experience.

I was astonished to note the absence of a mention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ ongoing programs open to the general public. As well as screenings, programs include world-class exhibitions, seminars and, as mentioned in passing in your article, their extensive film restoration project.
