In reality, it’s an awards show

Apparently acting on the dual beliefs that no form of entertainment can exist without self-congratulation, and that you really can’t have too many awards shows on TV, ABC on Thursday announced the formation of the Reality Awards.

They will be presented to “network and cable prime-time reality and alternative series and specials,” ABC said.

Categories will range from best series to most memorable moment to best twist, and fans will do the voting via the Internet from nominees selected by a panel of nearly 200 entertainment industry employees.

The first show, a two-hour affair, will arrive this fall, covering programs that aired during the 2002-03 TV season. It will be produced by Don Mischer, who also is producing this year’s Emmy Awards.
