After being stuck in a strong current for six hours, a paraplegic man halfway through an anticipated 42-mile round-trip swim from San Pedro to Santa Catalina Island ended his attempt Thursday night.

Jason Pipoly, 32, of San Antonio, climbed into an accompanying boat after 24 hours and 14 minutes in the water, a spokeswoman said.

Pipoly, who lost the use of his legs in a 1998 car crash, started the swim Wednesday night.
