Some Ancient Ancestors May Have Come by Boat
A study of 33 prehistoric skulls found in Baja California suggests that at least some of the first immigrants to this continent came from the South Pacific by boat rather than across the Bering Strait.
Researchers from the University of Barcelona reported in this week’s Nature that the long, narrow skulls share a close affinity to those of the present inhabitants of the southern Pacific Rim.
Most early skulls found in North America reflect the broad, short shape of northern Asians, who were thought to have walked across the land bridge 12,000 to 15,000 years ago.
