Minnesota Twin third-base coach Al Newman suffered a hemorrhage in his brain but did not have an aneurysm as initially feared, tests showed Thursday at Chicago.

Newman remained hospitalized in serious condition Wednesday night.

Newman had an MRI exam and will remain in Chicago for one week as doctors monitor him, team spokesman Mike Herman said.

An MRI exam on Atlanta closer John Smoltz’s tender elbow did not show any further damage.

The right-hander, on the disabled list for two weeks because of tendinitis, returned to Turner Field after three days of rehab.

Smoltz said he won’t travel with the Braves on their six-game trip beginning tonight, but he still plans to return for the postseason.
