Emmy stars will auction the duds off their backs

They’ll pose in them, hug in them and probably sweat in them too. But the high-glam gowns and designer tuxes worn by more than 30 actors to Sunday’s Emmy Awards show will be dry cleaned before the highest bidders claim them in an auction for charity that begins after the telecast.

That’s when viewers can log onto www.clothesoffourback.org and eBay.com and bid for the next 10 days on the red-carpet duds worn by Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox Arquette, Jennifer Garner, Debra Messing, Edie Falco, Michael Chiklis, Bryan Cranston, Eric McCormack, Bradley Whitford, Jane Kaczmarek and other actors and actresses.

“We get so much attention at award shows and so much free clothes, so why not donate them to a great cause?” says Kaczmarek, co-creator of Clothes Off Our Back, which raised $87,000 for four charities last year.

She’ll have her black, strapless Reem Acra gown on the auction block. Other labels will include Carolina Herrera, worn by Cox Arquette, and Vera Wang, worn by Falco. Most of the men will be in Hugo Boss and Prada.

This time around, the charities are Los Angeles-based Cure Autism Now and the Union of Concerned Scientists, a nonprofit, nonpartisan environmental group based in Boston. “We’re such a mom-and-pop organization, but this is one of the best things we’ve ever done,” says Kaczmarek, noting that the vintage Christian Dior gown Aniston wore last year went to the highest bidder at $50,000. “That money provided immunization shots for 50,000 children. The funds go to such tangible things,” she said.
