Police Chief Announces Date of Retirement

Police Chief Steve Belcher announced Wednesday that he plans to retire Nov. 5, ending a 32-year career with the Police Department.
Belcher, 54, joined the force as a reserve in 1971. He said he had been contemplating retiring for a year or so, but made his decision after this year’s city budget hearings.
Belcher grew up in Santa Cruz and graduated from Santa Cruz High School.
