Gamboa Sues Attacker, Ballpark Security Firm

Kansas City Royal coach Tom Gamboa filed a lawsuit Friday against the man who ran onto the field at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field with his son last season and attacked him.

The lawsuit was filed in Cook County Circuit Court against William Ligue Jr., as well as the security firm and concessionaire at the ballpark.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Gamboa is asking for more than $200,000 in damages from Ligue, Illinois SportService Inc., a subsidiary of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Delaware North Companies, and SDI Security Inc., which provides security at the ballpark.

Gamboa accuses Illinois SportService of serving alcohol to Ligue until he became intoxicated. Gamboa contends that spurred the attack.

Ligue, 35, was sentenced last month to 30 months’ probation on two counts of aggravated battery. He also must perform community service, attend parenting classes, remain in a substance abuse program and abide by a curfew for 90 days.

Rookie left-hander Billy Traber of the Cleveland Indians will undergo “Tommy John” ligament transplant surgery on his elbow, and won’t be able to pitch for at least nine months.

Traber, 23, a former Loyola Marymount star who was 6-9 with a 5.24 earned-run average in 18 starts, has been pitching despite a damaged elbow for years, but only recently did it get so sore that he couldn’t tolerate the pain.
