16-Year-Old Killed in Alleged Gang Battle
A 16-year-old high school student has become the latest fatality in an escalating battle between street gangs, police said.
Jose Eduardo Chavez was riding in a van when shots were fired from a vehicle that pulled up alongside it. A bullet hit him in the abdomen, Yuba City Police Lt. Bill Ollar said Monday.
Chavez was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville where he was pronounced dead, Ollar said. Chavez is believed to have been in the Sure Inos gang, while the shooter or shooters apparently are members of the rival Norte Inos, he said.
