A Place at the Table
“Do You Know Your Place?” (Commentary, April 5) has shed light on a dark corner of our political system. I fully agree that people should not be able to buy a seat at the table for a congressional hearing. However, Brian Montopoli’s solution leaves much to be desired. Nobody should be required to spend days on the sidewalk, exposed to the weather, even if the seats are for themselves. There is a simple solution. Two hours before a hearing, everyone who is waiting to enter draws a random number, which determines seating priority. There is no incentive to waste time and no preference for those able to buy a seat at the table.
