Despite a recent blitz of appearances on every national television show except, possibly, “Sesame Street,” Janet Jackson was unable to escort Usher out of the top spot on the national album sales chart with her saucy new effort, “Damita Jo.”

Usher, the young R&B; heartthrob, easily held on to the No. 1 spot, moving an extra 486,000 copies of his new “Confessions” album, which entered atop the chart last week with a 2004 first-week high of 1.1 million copies.

That leaves the woman of Super Bowl “wardrobe malfunction” infamy in the No. 2 slot with sales of 381,000 for her latest, according to Nielsen SoundScan. That’s a little more than half the first-week figure of 605,000 three years ago for her “All for You,” which entered the chart at No. 1.

This week’s Top 10 is infused with new blood, half its occupants making their chart debuts.

Houston-born rapper Lil’ Flip sold 198,000 copies of his second major-label album, “U Gotta Feel Me.” That was enough to enter the chart at No. 4, behind the still-strong 15th entry in the “Now That’s What I Call Music!” hits compilation series, which posted an additional 225,000 copies in its second week.

Two blues-soaked efforts also had impressive debuts: Aerosmith’s “Honkin’ on Bobo” (No. 5) edged Eric Clapton’s “Me & Mr. Johnson” (No. 6), with sales of 161,000 and 128,000, respectively.

St. Louis hip-hop performer J-Kwon is the other new face in the Top 10, with his debut album “Hood Hop” entering at No. 7 with sales of 125,000.
