Bolsa Chica a Jewel in an Overdeveloped County

Share

Re “The Coast Isn’t Clear, Thanks to O.C. Builders,” April 18: It’s true that open space on the coast is rapidly disappearing under development. However, the Bolsa Chica Mesa, one of the crown jewels of open space left in Orange County, may be close to being preserved in perpetuity. Voters passed Proposition 50 in 2002, which specifically allocated money for the purchase of the Bolsa Chica Mesa. Most bond money has gone for the purchase of property in Northern California or Los Angeles. It’s time that Orange County got its fair share.

The landowner is a willing seller, and the funds are there in Proposition 50. The Bolsa Chica ecosystem needs to have a balanced wetlands and uplands ecosystem. Only with the purchase of the mesa will this balance be achieved.

I was shocked to read that our beautiful Orange County is more densely populated than L.A. County. Having moved here in 1963, I have watched the paving of Orange County. How shortsighted we were to not approve the airport at El Toro. The lack of an airport here stunts the growth of business, chokes our highways and further crowds the existing airports in the area. Apparently growth is good as long as progress is stifled.
