Hewitt Is Knocked Out by Schuettler in Monaco

Lleyton Hewitt lost a 3-0 lead in the third set Thursday and lost to Rainer Schuettler, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Hewitt also was a point away from a 5-3 lead in the last set. Schuettler had lost his opening match in seven of his previous eight tournaments.

Now, though, Schuettler is in the quarterfinals of the clay-court tournament. He’ll meet sixth-seeded Tim Henman, a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 winner against No. 9 Nicolas Massu.

Defending champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and Chanda Rubin are among the players joining sisters Venus and Serena Williams in committing to the JPMorgan Chase Open, July 19-26, at the Home Depot Center.

The Newport Beach Breakers announced the schedule for the World TeamTennis Pro League season. The Breakers will play 14 matches during the three-week season, including seven home matches at the Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach, beginning with their home opener July 5 against Springfield.

Anna Kournikova is being sued by her parents, who say the tennis player has taken over the Miami Beach waterfront home the three jointly own. Sergei and Alla Kournikova want the seven-bedroom home “partitioned,” meaning they want money for their share of the home.

Washington’s Alex Vlaski rallied to defeat USC’s Jasmil Al-Agba, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2), in a Pacific 10 singles second-round match at the 104th Ojai Valley tournament. UCLA’s Chris Lam and Alberto Francis and USC’s Adriano Biasella also advanced to the quarterfinals.

College Basketball

San Francisco concluded its monthlong search for a coach, hiring Jessie Evans from Louisiana Lafayette. Evans spent seven seasons with the Ragin’ Cajuns, leading them to two NCAA tournament berths and four 20-win seasons.

Air Force promoted Chris Mooney, 31, to coach, a day after Joe Scott left for Princeton. Mooney has been with Air Force for four years.

UC Riverside hired John Margaritis as its new women’s coach. Margaritis, 45, spent the last seven years as an assistant at Northern Arizona.

Former WNBA and Olympic coach Nell Fortner, a TV analyst since 2001, was hired as women’s coach at Auburn.

Charlie Sifford, who cracked the PGA Tour’s Caucasian-only clause in 1961 and was the first black member to win on tour, is the first black chosen for the World Golf Hall of Fame. He will be inducted Nov. 15.

The Washington Redskins filled an opening at middle linebacker by agreeing to terms with Mike Barrow, who had been released by the New York Giants.

The NCAA recertified 28 bowl games and will consider applications from potential games in Seattle, Denver and South Florida that could be added after the 2005 season.

Malcolm Cameron, 34, was hired as coach and director of hockey operations of the Long Beach Ice Dogs.

The International Ski Federation banned Mayer for life after the discovery of blood doping paraphernalia in a house occupied by Austrian skiers at Salt Lake City. A separate International Olympic Committee suspension banning Mayer from the 2006 and 2010 Olympics remains.

Lance Armstrong won the third and fourth stages of the Tour de Georgia to take the lead in the 641-mile, seven-stage cycling competition.
