Rebels killed five Colombian soldiers and wounded two others in an oil-rich eastern province, the army reported, as security forces braced for attacks to mark President Alvaro Uribe’s second anniversary in office.

The battle with members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, took place near Saravena, not far from where troops killed three union officials Thursday. Union leaders say they were murdered. The army and government said the three were rebels.
