Here, in capsule form, are the events that will be highlighted today in Athens:

Competition begins with three sessions of team and all-around qualifying. The U.S. team is in the second session with Russia and Spain. The top 24 individual scorers -- no more than two per country -- will advance to Wednesday’s final, and the top eight teams will advance to Monday’s finals. Also, the top eight performers on each of the six apparatus -- vault, parallel bars, high bar, floor exercise, rings and pommel horse -- will qualify for the event finals Aug. 22 and 23.
