A Los Angeles city firefighter was killed Saturday night after being crushed by a firetruck as she was leaving the scene of a house fire in Encino, police said.

Jaime L. Foster, 25, of Palmdale died at a Tarzana hospital, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department. She had been riding in the back of the truck that ran over her, police said.

It is not known if she fell or jumped off the truck, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Ed Wheelis. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Foster was one of several firefighters who fought a fire that officials believe was sparked by an electrical short-circuit.

Foster was the first city firefighter to die in the line of duty since March 1998, when three were killed in a helicopter crash while taking a girl to a hospital, Humphrey said.
