Now seriously, folks, it’s stand-up Ronnie Reagan
Though he may not have made it as a finalist on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” Ronald Reagan wasn’t called “The Great Communicator” for nothing. The late president knew his way around a joke, funny anecdote or tall tale.
On the “Stand-Up Reagan” DVD, which arrives Sept. 7, he comes across as a jovial combination of Mark Twain and the Gipper. Originally released on VHS in 1989 -- not long after he left the Oval Office -- “Stand-Up Reagan” is described as “the ultimate collector’s edition of President Reagan’s favorite jokes, stories and hilarious one-liners.”
The humor is light and often self-deprecating. During his first State of the Union address, after describing how George Washington began the tradition in 1790, he added: “I did not actually hear George Washington....”
Perhaps the funniest thing about the DVD is that it’s being released by Uproar Entertainment -- uproarcomedycd.com -- which according to its website is “committed to recording today’s greatest talents in the world of stand-up comedy.”
Besides Reagan, Uproar offers CDs and DVDs from the likes of Margaret Cho and Denis Leary, whose humor is far raunchier and left of center than that of the former commander in chief.
