Glaus Exits on Good Terms

Share

The Angels, perhaps scared off by speculation last fall that Troy Glaus was seeking an Eric Chavez-like contract (six years, $66 million), never made an effort to retain their power-hitting third baseman, who signed a four-year, $45-million deal with Arizona on Thursday. If that was the case, Glaus said Friday, the Angels miscalculated.

“They assumed that,” Glaus said. “If that’s what they thought, they never talked about anything with us.”

Glaus, who attended a news conference to announce Russ Ortiz’s signing with the Diamondbacks at the winter meetings Friday, said he and the Angels “parted cordially,” and that he wouldn’t be motivated to prove the Angels wrong.

The Angels informed Glaus in late October that he would not be offered a contract, so he has had weeks to come to grips with the fact that he will wear a new uniform next season.

“That decision was made for me,” said Glaus, who will be replaced by rookie Dallas McPherson in 2005. “It wasn’t a decision I made. They decided they didn’t want me back, so I had to find employment elsewhere. It’s a business. I have no problem with that.”
