Season’s classic trampled

So -- Matthew Bourne’s “Nutcracker” is “satiric” [“In Satiric Grip of ‘Nutcracker!’ ” by Lewis Segal, Dec. 20]. Just what we need in a popular ballet, a good dose of cynicism! As the ballet that is most people’s introduction to this wonderful and underappreciated art form, it was a mistake to have this interpretation performed during the holiday season. In fact, I can’t think of any season suitable for its performance. The plot was distorted and depressing. Tchaikovsky’s music was trivialized by the glitzy sets and costumes. Further, minimalist “choreography” and posturing replaced ballet. And high heels instead of toe shoes! Too bad for all those children who were offered lumps of coal instead of sugarplums dancing.
