Loyola Marymount Wins

Matthew Knight scored 19 points, six in the final three minutes, to lead Loyola Marymount past Northern Arizona, 69-64, in the first round of the Gossner Foods Holiday Classic Wednesday night in Logan, Utah.

Knight, the leading scorer for the Lions (8-3), put in a rebound basket with the score tied at 60-60, then followed with two free throws and a second tip-in basket to push the Lions past the Lumberjacks (6-6).

Kyle Feuerbach made a three-point shot and was fouled with 2:16 left in the game, tying the score at 64-64 with a free throw, but the Lumberjacks didn’t score again.

Knight also had a game-high 12 rebounds and Chris Ayer scored 10 for the Lions.

Northern Arizona was led in scoring by DeJuan Stevens with 17 on six-for-12 shooting.

Loyola Marymount plays host to Utah State in the tournament championship game tonight.

Loyola Marymount guard Brandon Worthy will have surgery today to remove torn cartilage from his right knee and will be sidelined up to six weeks. Worthy, who sat out last season because of a broken right hand, is the Lions’ third-leading scorer at 11.5 points and is the team leader in assists and steals.

Pepperdine 74, Mississippi Valley State 62 -- Yakhouba Diawara scored 20 points to lead the Waves (9-5) in a consolation game of the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Diawara made a three-point shot and a free throw to spark an 8-0 run late in the second half.

The Waves used their size inside to control the boards. They had 40 rebounds, compared to Mississippi Valley State’s 24.

Glen McGowan led Pepperdine with 11 rebounds, and teammate Alex Acker grabbed nine.

McGowan and Acker had 16 points each and Russell Hicks added 11 first-half points.

Sophomore Jeffrey Price led the Delta Devils (2-7) with 19 points. Kelvin McCoy scored 12.
