A deputy responding to a woman’s 911 call Sunday in Fontana fatally shot a man after the man charged him with a dining room chair, officials said.

Hugo Mancia, 37, of Fontana was killed instantly.

The deputy had gone to the home, in the 17000 Block of Ivy Avenue, shortly after 911 dispatchers received a hang-up phone call from a crying woman at that address at 10:20 p.m. Mancia answered the door and said nothing was wrong, but the deputy saw a woman standing behind him crying, said sheriff’s spokeswoman Robin Haynal.

When the deputy tried to talk to the woman, Mancia became angry, raised a heavy dining room chair and charged, Haynal said. The deputy yelled at him to drop the chair, she said, but Mancia swung it and was shot once in the chest.

“Obviously, the deputy felt in fear of his life, or he would not have shot,” Haynal said
