Two motorists died Tuesday when a man driving a stolen SUV ran a red light and crashed into two cars in Sun Valley, police said.

The accident happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. at Telfair Avenue and Sheldon Street, moments after the driver of the SUV had been confronted by undercover police officers in a nearby parking lot.

Police said that the vice officers had checked the SUV’s license plates and found that it had been reported stolen five days earlier. When the SUV pulled into a parking lot at San Fernando Road and Allegheny Street the officers approached it, identified themselves and attempted to arrest the driver, the LAPD said. But he sped off.

A short distance away, the SUV struck a Mercedes-Benz and a Honda, according to LAPD Officer Jason Lee. The Mercedes driver escaped injury but two women in the Honda died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was listed in critical condition.

The accident remains under investigation, but authorities said it was not the result of a police pursuit.

Names of the victims were not released pending notification of relatives.
