Gas Heater May Have Caused Family Illness

A faulty gas heater may have caused a Ventura family of six to become ill from carbon monoxide poisoning early Thursday, city fire officials said.
Authorities were called to the family’s apartment on Riverside Drive shortly before 7 a.m., where they found one adult family member unconscious and five others suffering from headaches and vomiting.
The victims, ranging in age from 5 to 35, were being treated at Ventura County Medical Center and Community Memorial Hospital, said Ventura Fire Battalion Chief Don McPherson. Their conditions were not immediately available.
McPherson said a carbon monoxide detector indicated a high level of the gas inside the apartment when firefighters arrived. Gas company officials were called to inspect the heater.
