Wie Makes Cut in Men’s Tournament

Michelle Wie advanced to the final round of the men’s 54-hole Hawaii Pearl Open, shooting a 4-under 68 Saturday at Aiea to finish two rounds at two-under 142. She was tied for 35th along with five others.

The 14-year-old sensation had six birdies and two bogeys. She made birdies on five of her first eight holes, but cooled off on the back side.

Wayne Levi shot a four-under-par 68 and Don Pooley a three-under 69 to move into a tie for the lead at six-under 138 after two rounds of the Royal Caribbean Classic at Key Biscayne, Fla. Nine players are within two strokes of the lead and 19 are within four shots heading into today’s final round of the Champions Tour’s first full-field event of the year.

Ernie Els held off Adam Scott by a stroke today to win the Heineken Classic at Melbourne, Australia, after blowing an eight-stroke lead with a terrible start that included a triple bogey.

He played the front nine in six over en route to a two-over 74. He finished at 20-under 268.

Fred S. Ridley, the incoming president of the U.S. Golf Assn., will not give up his membership at Augusta National, despite protests from a women’s group that his credibility is damaged by belonging to a golf club that has no female members.
