Grand Jury Issues Budget Report
A Sonoma County grand jury has released an upbeat outlook on the county’s handling of its budget crunch.
Due in part to the state’s financial problems, Sonoma County is facing a deficit in its fiscal 2003-04 budget of more than $16 million, a figure that could rise since it’s not clear how much money counties will receive from the state.
Despite worries caused by the growing deficit, an interim report by the grand jury said Sonoma County had built up its emergency reserves in recent years. The report said the county “has maintained a strong and conservative financial management operation, which allows it the flexibility to address unforeseen revenue needs.”
The report also said the county has one of the highest credit ratings of any county in California.
